Welcome to Sunday Song!

This is my attempt to post regularly every Sunday about a song I love. The key word is attempt.

I post the lyrics and then post them again (because I’m redundant-which you already know, if you frequently visit here)…but the second time I include my thoughts. There’s also a video of the song that you can play while reading the post.

First, some back ground info: I still remember the first time I heard this song. I truly didn’t like it very much. I felt like it repeated the same words too much. But over time, the words really began to hit home. I began to like the song. A lot.

And the thing is, when I found out I had a brain tumor, this song seemed to suddenly play a whole lot more. It would be on the radio right when I needed it. I’d hear it other places. Out of no where, the song would come to mind and I’d just want to break out singing it. In fact, even while I was in the hospital it would come on the radio. I remember being in the hospital bed, hearing this come on, and asking my mom to make it louder or whatever. This song helped me get through having brain surgery. It helped me through the recovery. It’s still helping me now. In fact, it helped me before I even had surgery.

What it comes down to is this: When I think of a song that helped me through all the brain tumor stuff, was able to draw me closer to God, and impacted me every time I heard it…this is the song. My brain tumor song, if you will. Because now whenever I hear this song, I think of how He got me through.

Our God Is Greater by Chris Tomlin

Water You turned into wine
Opened the eyes of the blind
There’s no one like You
None like You
Into the darkness You shine
Out of the ashes we rise
There’s no One like You
None like You

CHORUS
Our God is greater, our God is stronger
God You are higher than any other
Our God is Healer, awesome in power
Our God, Our God…

Into the darkness you shine
Out of the ashes we rise
There’s no One like You
None like You.

CHORUS

BRIDGE
And if Our God is for us, then who could ever stop us?
And if our God is with us, then what can stand against?
And if Our God is for us, then who could ever stop us?
And if our God is with us, then what can stand against?
What can stand against?

CHORUS

BRIDGE

Our God is greater, our God is stronger
God You are higher than any other
Our God is Healer, awesome in power
Our God, Our God…

Water You turned into wine
Opened the eyes of the blind
There’s no one like You
None like You
Into the darkness You shine
Out of the ashes we rise
There’s no One like You
None like You

He did it all. He turned water into wine. He made blind people see and lame people walk. He restored hearing to deaf people. He even raised a guy from the dead. I’d like to see you try that. He amazes me. I could never do what He did and continues to do. No one is like Him, nor will anyone ever come close. I take such comfort in that. There’s so much comfort in the fact that God, our God, is greater and better than anyone else. He’s better than us. Why would I want to worship a God that’s as good as me? That would be ridiculous.

CHORUS
Our God is greater, our God is stronger
God You are higher than any other
Our God is Healer, awesome in power
Our God, Our God…

Does it get more simple than that? I really don’t know. I love to change the song around a little bit sometimes, so sometimes I sing “You are” or “God You” instead of “Our God.” For example, “God You are greater, God You are stronger, God You are higher than any other. God You are Healer, awesome in power. You are, You are…”

But my favorite way is to sing, “My God is greater, my God is stronger, my God is higher than any other. My God is Healer, He’s awesome in power. Yeah You are, You are…” It kind of combines the two a tiny bit, but it helps me focus on the fact that I have a God that is so many amazing things. That’s not to say that if you said those same words, your God would be better than my God. Or vice versa. It just helps me focus on the fact that I serve quite an amazing God.

Into the darkness you shine
Out of the ashes we rise
There’s no One like You
None like You.

There’s something so captivating about picturing something beautiful rising from ashes. There’s something so awe-inspiring and stunning about that. I’ve always thought, when hearing this part of the song, about all the broken relationships. To me, ashes come from fire, which comes when something burns or dies. The relationships have pretty much died. So when it says “out of the ashes we rise,” I always thought of the broken relationships. It’s completely possible that they will be healed and “we’ll rise” from those ashes. But after the tumor, I’ve realized that it’s so much more than that. There’s so much more in life to “rise” from. And He gives the power and strength to help us do that. Amazing.

CHORUS

BRIDGE
And if Our God is for us, then who could ever stop us?
And if our God is with us, then what can stand against?
And if Our God is for us, then who could ever stop us?
And if our God is with us, then what can stand against?
What can stand against?

Isn’t this just amazing to think about? I mean, if you grew up in church then you’ve heard this all your life…trust me, I know. I’ve always been told “nothing is impossible with God.” And that’s true. It’s completely true and I know it from experience. But when you hear it so much growing up, sometimes it can lose some of its’ meaning and/or power. But these lyrics really hit home because, seriously, think about it…if the God that was talked about earlier in the song is for you, who can stop you? Really, who? No one. And if that same God is with you then there’s literally nothing that can stand against you.

Wow.

That really hit home with the tumor. I just kept thinking, “If God is with me, which He is, then nothing can stop His Plans. Nothing can get in the way, not even a tumor. What’s meant to happen is going to happen anyways, so I don’t need to worry or panic or be scared. God is with me. He’s my HEALER and He’s got it all under control.”

CHORUS

BRIDGE

Our God is greater, our God is stronger
God You are higher than any other
Our God is Healer, awesome in power
Our God, Our God…
